Renting With a New Driving Licence

A licence under 6 months old is accepted. Full insurance / CDW becomes compulsory and a 25% surcharge applies — that is the entire difference.

See all prices

A driving licence less than 6 months old does not stop you renting a car in Dubai with us. Two things change: full insurance / CDW becomes compulsory instead of optional, and a 25% surcharge applies on top of the rental.

That is the whole rule. It is a licence-age rule, not a driver-age rule — a 30-year-old who passed their UAE test last month is treated the same as a 22-year-old who did.

Separately, the minimum driver age still applies: 22 for economy and mid-range cars, 25 for premium, luxury and sports cars.

Why the surcharge exists: the insurer prices a newly licensed driver differently, and compulsory CDW is what removes your exposure to the AED 1,500 excess if something goes wrong. The 25% is the insurance cost, not a penalty — and it is the same 25%-band CDW every other renter can buy voluntarily.

Questions people ask us

Can I rent a car in Dubai with a new driving licence?+
Yes. If your licence is under 6 months old, full insurance / CDW becomes compulsory and a 25% surcharge applies on top of the rental rate. Nothing else changes.
How long must I have held my licence to rent a car in Dubai?+
There is no hard minimum with us — but a licence held under 6 months triggers compulsory CDW and the 25% surcharge. Our standard terms assume a licence held at least 1 year.
How much is the new-licence surcharge?+
25% of the rental, and full insurance / CDW is included in that rather than sold separately.
Does the surcharge apply to a new UAE licence if I have driven for years abroad?+
Ask us. The rule is written against licence age, so send a photo of both licences on WhatsApp and we will confirm in writing what applies to your booking before you pay.
Can I rent a luxury car with a new licence?+
Luxury and sports cars need a driver aged 25 or over. On top of that, a licence under 6 months old carries compulsory CDW and the 25% surcharge.
Is a tourist's home-country licence treated as new?+
The same rule is applied to the licence you present. If yours was issued recently, expect compulsory CDW and the surcharge — see our documents page for what tourists must bring.
