Al Ain is the garden city at the Oman border, an hour and three-quarters from Dubai on the E66. The day-trip circuit is Jebel Hafeet — the mountain road to the top is the reason many people go — then the UNESCO-listed Al Ain Oasis, Al Jahili Fort and the Al Ain Palace Museum, Al Ain Zoo and the Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Centre, Green Mubazzarah at the foot of the mountain, and the camel market early in the morning if you are that sort of traveller.
The non-tourist runs are just as common: appointments at Tawam Hospital and Al Ain Hospital, visits to UAE University and Al Ain's schools and colleges, and families with relatives in the city who want a driver for the day rather than two hours each way at the wheel.
How Al Ain is priced
The published one-way fare is AED 800, all-inclusive of Salik, fuel and parking on the route, plus 5% VAT. A day trip with the car waiting at Jebel Hafeet and the oasis, or a same-day return after a hospital appointment, is quoted as one fixed fare on the same basis before pickup. Waiting beyond what was agreed is billed at the hourly chauffeur rate, not a penalty.
Because it is a long day, families usually take a seven-seater so everyone has room: the Exeed VX, GMC Yukon or Chevrolet Suburban; two or three adults are comfortable in a BYD Han or BMW 5 Series.
