Dubai's roads are superb — wide, well-maintained and fast. They are also closely monitored, and the rules differ from what many visitors are used to. Understanding Salik, speed enforcement and the common fines before you drive will save you money and stress. Here is the practical guide every renter should read.

How Salik (road tolls) works

Salik is Dubai's automatic toll system. There are no booths — overhead gantries read a tag on your windscreen and charge a small fee each time you pass, with no cap on daily crossings on busy routes. Every Pindi Boys rental already has a registered Salik tag, so you never need to set anything up. Tolls accumulate during your rental and are settled at the end. Plan routes with this in mind: a single trip down Sheikh Zayed Road can pass several gates.

Speed limits and the buffer

Speed limits are posted clearly and enforced by fixed and mobile cameras. On many highways there has traditionally been a small tolerance above the posted limit, but this is shrinking and should never be relied upon — treat the posted number as the limit. Limits drop sharply on slip roads, in tunnels and through communities, and cameras are often placed exactly where drivers expect open road. When in doubt, slow down.

  • Watch the signs constantly. Limits change without much warning.
  • Lane discipline matters. The far-left lane is for overtaking; tailgating and flashing are themselves offences.
  • Radar-detector apps are illegal in the UAE — do not use them.

Common fines to avoid

  • Speeding — the most frequent fine, scaled to how far over you were.
  • Tailgating and unsafe lane changes — actively enforced.
  • Mobile phone use while driving — heavy penalty and black points.
  • Not wearing a seatbelt — applies to all passengers.
  • Illegal parking — pay the meter (RTA app or machines) and mind reserved zones.

The golden rule for renters: zero tolerance on alcohol

The UAE has a zero-tolerance drink-driving policy. There is no safe amount. If you have had anything to drink, use a taxi, a ride-hail, or book our car-with-driver service. It is the single most important rule on this page.

How fines work with a rental car

Traffic fines are linked to the vehicle's plate. With a rental, any fines incurred during your rental period are your responsibility and are reconciled at the end of the hire, typically against your deposit. Drive carefully and there is nothing to pay. We are always transparent about any charges and will share the official record.

Quick pre-drive checklist

  • Confirm your Salik tag is active (ours always are).
  • Set your phone to hands-free or do-not-disturb before you move.
  • Note the speed limit as you join each road.
  • Keep your licence and the rental documents in the car.
  • Park only in marked, paid bays.

Follow these and Dubai is one of the easiest, most enjoyable places in the world to drive. Want a car that is already set up with Salik and full insurance? Browse our fleet or message us on WhatsApp and we will deliver it ready to go.
