Renting a Car in Dubai as a Tourist: Documents, Licence & Salik Explained

Tourist receiving rental car keys in Dubai

Dubai is one of the world's best driving cities: wide roads, cheap fuel, and attractions spread far apart. But tourists constantly arrive with the wrong assumptions about licences, tolls and deposits. Here is everything you need to know before you book — from a licensed Dubai operator, not a broker.

1. Can you legally drive here? Check your licence first

The single most important question. Dubai recognises home-country licences from a long list of countries — including the UK, EU states, USA, Canada, Australia, and GCC nations — for tourists on visit visas. If your country is not on the recognised list (for example Pakistan or India), you need an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued in your home country, carried together with your original licence.

Critical rule for residents: the moment your UAE residence visa is stamped, your foreign licence and IDP become invalid for driving here. Residents must hold a UAE driving licence. Many new residents get caught by this.

2. Documents you'll be asked for

  • Tourists: passport, visa or entry stamp, home driving licence, IDP (if required for your country).
  • Residents: Emirates ID and UAE driving licence.

That's it. A legitimate company like ours confirms your booking on WhatsApp within minutes once documents are shared — delivery anywhere in Dubai is free.

3. Salik — Dubai's invisible toll system

There are no toll booths in Dubai. Salik gates on Sheikh Zayed Road and other key routes deduct a fee automatically via the tag on your windscreen. In a rental car, crossings are billed to you by the rental company after your trip. Two tips: ask your operator for their per-crossing rate upfront, and use Google Maps' toll-avoidance option if you want to minimise gates on routine drives.

4. Fuel, parking and speed cameras

  • Fuel is inexpensive by global standards and stations are full-service — you don't even leave the car.
  • Parking: public RTA parking zones are paid via app or SMS on weekdays; most malls offer free hours. Never park in unmarked sandy areas near intersections — fines apply.
  • Speed cameras are everywhere and fines transfer to you via the rental agreement. Dubai's radar tolerance is not something to test; stick to posted limits and you'll have a stress-free trip.

5. Choosing the right car for your trip

6. The deposit question, answered honestly

A refundable security deposit, scaled to the vehicle, is standard industry practice — it covers potential fines and Salik that appear after you fly home. At Pindi Boys it is fully returned after the rental subject to no fines or damage, and we tell you the amount before you book. If any company is vague about deposit terms, walk away.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I rent a car in Dubai with my home country licence?

Visitors from many countries (including the UK, EU, USA, Canada, GCC and others) can drive on their home licence. Visitors from countries like Pakistan and India generally need an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their home licence.

What documents do I need to rent a car as a tourist?

Passport, UAE visa or entry stamp, your home driving licence, and an IDP if your country requires one. UAE residents instead provide Emirates ID and a UAE driving licence.

How does Salik (toll) work in a rental car?

Salik gates charge automatically to the car's tag as you pass — there are no toll booths. Your rental company bills the crossings to you afterwards, usually with a small service margin. Ask for the rate before you book.

Is a security deposit required?

Most companies hold a refundable deposit scaled to the vehicle class, released after the rental once fines and Salik are cleared. At Pindi Boys the deposit is fully refundable subject to no fines or damage.

What is the minimum age and rental period?

Most rentals require the driver to be 21+ (25+ for luxury cars). Our minimum rental period is 2 days, with discounted weekly and monthly rates.
